On February 20, 2012, following the presentations from An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, T.D., and the Vice President of China Xi Jinping at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin, the Irish Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, T.D., hosted the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Professor Yang Ke of Peking University, China, and Dr. Sean Rowland of Hibernia College, Dublin, at the Department of Education and Skills. This academic joint venture will see the two institutions collaborate to provide postgraduate education in the area of Regulatory Sciences across China.
President Martelly of Haiti visits Hibernia College
On Friday 27th of January 2012, the Haitian President Michel Martelly and the First Lady, Madam Sophia Martelly, visited the Hibernia College Dublin office. They were accompanied by Laurent Lamothe, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Damien Merlo, advisor to President Martelly. This was the first time in that a Haitian President has visited Ireland and Hibernia College was the delegation’s first port of call.

PROFILE – Teacher e-training
Hibernia College and its elearnITT programme tick all the boxes for government reform of initial teacher training (ITT) in England.
Hibernia College UK was accredited by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) this September (2011), making it the first new organisation to be accredited as an ITT provider by the TDA for more than six years.
Haiti Update
Haitian educators completing one of Hibernia College's CPD Courses
Hibernia College, the Haitian Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) and Quisqueya University, Port-au-Prince, have partnered to establish a national institute for in-service teacher education in Haiti (Institut National pour la Formation des Enseignants, INFE).
The college is currently delivering the inaugural distance teacher education programme in Haiti, providing Haitian educators with an online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course.

On November 09, 2011, in Cape Town, the Irish Minister of State for Trade and Development, Jan O’Sullivan, T.D., attended the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and Hibernia College Dublin that will see the two institutions collaborate in providing postgraduate education in the area of Regulatory Sciences.

Hibernia to train British teachers

HIBERNIA COLLEGE, the online education institute, has been accredited in Britain to train maths, physics and chemistry teachers. The move will allow the college, founded by Dr Sean Rowland, to retrain bankers, accountants and lawyers to work in teaching.
“There are a lot of people out of work or seeking to change career in Britain, and we will now be able to help them,” Rowland said. Hibernia is the first new college in the past six years to have been accredited by the Training and Development Agency for Schools in Britain to provide initial teacher-training programmes.
Hibernia College receives TDA accreditation
Hibernia College UK announced today that the College has been accredited by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) as a provider of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes and courses in England. The College is the first new provider of ITT programmes and courses to be accredited by the TDA for more than six years.
The College will deliver its “elearnITT” ITT programmes using a blend of online and onsite tuition in the subject areas of Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Trainees successfully completing these programmes will be awarded a postgraduate certificate in education as well as qualified teacher status (QTS).

Hibernia College announces new online second-level teacher education programme
Hibernia College today announced the launch of its new post-primary teacher education programme, its H.Dip. in Arts in Post-Primary Education (HDAPPE). Modelled on their highly successful primary teacher education programme, this programme will be delivered using a blend of online and on-site tuition and is aimed at degree holders who wish to become second-level school teachers.
This announcement comes just weeks after the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn, declared that 20 new post-primary schools need to be built in Ireland over the next five years to meet the demands of our growing population. The demand for education in Ireland is due to increase by 72% over the next two decades.

Hibernia College has won gold and bronze awards at the UK e-Learning Awards 2010, presented by e-Learning Age Magazine, the UK’s leading publication for online and blended learning. The awards are held each year to showcase the latest developments and innovations in the area of e-learning. The awards ceremony took place on 12 November in London’s Sheraton Park Lane Hotel.
Building negotiation and conflict management skills for the 21st Century
To mark the occasion of their tenth anniversary Hibernia College are delighted to bring Prof. Brian Mandell to Dublin for a one day seminar programme on November 12th 2010. Mandell is the Director of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Negotiation Project. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on consensus building in domestic and international protracted policy disputes.
His seminar on the 12th of November will utilise interactive lectures and simulation exercises to help participants master the art and science of negotiation and conflict resolution. He will begin by analysing the major trends and challenges in negotiation and conflict resolution, and how organisations can navigate these key emerging developments in uncertain and turbulent times.
10th Anniversary Celebrations

On September 6th in Dublin, Hibernia College and the Vienna School of Clinical Research (VSCR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see the two institutions jointly deliver online education to students worldwide. This is a significant development that will see both institutes expand their international reach and make their courses available to an increased audience through web enabled blended learning.
Language students to boost local economy by €1m

The student teachers will be taking part in a three-week course and will immerse themselves in the Irish language and culture in the local community.
The students from Hibernia College are taking the courses as part of the higher diploma in arts in primary education. Hibernia College students last year attended Gaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh for the first time and numbers have risen by 50 this year.

Seán Rowland has the dubious distinction of having sparked angry reaction when he launched his business, Hibernia College, almost ten years ago.
At the time, Rowland’s online college was a revolutionary idea – and it drew anger and derogatory comments from many quarters. Most of the attention focused on Hibernia’s online teacher-training programme, which attracted opposition and ‘‘utmost concern’’ from the established training colleges in Ireland.

In their first competitive game, Hibernia College Men’s Gaelic Football Team were beaten by a strong DIT team. This CA Laighean Senior Football Championship first round match allows teams of 11 players. Hibernia College students travelled from all over Ireland, and put up a very spirited and committed performance, captained by Jess Codd on the day. The score line reflected better organisation from DIT, who have had months training and playing together.
Hibernia College’s response to the Haiti earthquake
Dr. Seán Rowland, president of Hibernia College, was invited to attend the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in Miami hosted by President Bill Clinton and chaired by Denis O’Brien. Dr. Rowland spoke to the group about the development of the National Institute for Teacher Education in Haiti. The initiative was developed by an international team of educators, administrators and technologists at Hibernia College and presented to the Clinton Global Initiative. Initial funding has already been secured and the institute is welcoming support from educators and institutes worldwide to sustain a long term teacher education centre in Haiti.

Hibernia College teams up with Camara

This summer, Hibernia College teamed up with Camara, a volunteer organisation dedicated to educating communities in Africa through the usage of computer hardware and software training programmes.
Camara train African teachers in basic computer literacy as well as in more specialised software and approached Hibernia College with the request to deliver some of our summer courses as in-service training for teachers in Kenya. The courses that they selected to deliver were ICT in Education, English Teaching Methodologies, Infant Education and Maths Teaching Methodologies.
Camara delivered these courses over 5 weeks in Malindi, Kenya, and feedback was excellent with the Camara volunteers complimenting the organisation of the Hibernia College courses and how the online structure was “very good and clear for the participants”. The participating teachers were also very impressed with the courses and keen to learn more about how the internet can be used in so many ways in both their personal and professional lives.
Hibernia College was delighted with the successful delivery of these courses and we hope to work with Camara again next summer.

A programme developed by Hibernia College in Dublin is to be used by the British government to retrain finance and technology professionals as maths and science teachers, writes Tom Lyons.
iTeach which the college developed with Canterbury Christ Church University in England will be used at five universities initially.
The project is designed to address a shortage of maths, physics and chemistry teachers and the aim is to retrain 750 people.

Hibernia College President, Dr. Seán Rowland, pictured (back right) with the other members of the Dean’s Alumni Leadership Council (DALC) of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. The Dean’s Alumni Leadership Council is designed to engage graduates of the Kennedy School as volunteers in the ongoing work of strengthening the mission of the School. It acts as a corps of ambassadors, expanding the visibility, reach, and recognition of the School. DALC members provide valuable alumni service to the School through participation in specific alumni, student, and development outreach activities.

Hibernia College has been shortlisted in four categories at the UK e-Learning Awards 2009, presented by e-Learning Age Magazine, the UK’s leading publication for online and blended learning. Last year Hibernia College won a silver medal at the awards for its online M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Medicine and this year hopes to go one better.
The four categories in which Hibernia College has been shortlisted are: Best online or distance learning programme (for its Higher Diploma in Arts in Primary Education); Best use of synchronous e-learning; e-Learning industry award for outstanding corporate achievement; e-Learning industry award for outstanding individual achievement (for Dr. Seán Rowland, Hibernia College President).
Hibernia College features in Towards Maturity publication

Hibernia College’s M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Medicine has featured in a publication entitled What every learning and development professional needs to know about e-learning by Clive Shepherd and Laura Overton. The 11 page booklet was produced by Towards Maturity Enterprises, a not for profit organisation in the UK that provides research and resources to help organisations improve the impact of learning technologies in the workplace.

Hibernia College helps address shortage of teachers in England
iTeach, the online teacher education programme for science and maths teachers in England founded by Hibernia College, is expanding to a consortium of five universities across England in order to address the shortage of quality professionals in these areas. The iTeach programme is targeting 750 teachers and is funded by the UK government’s Training and Development Agency (TDA), which is responsible for the training and development of the school workforce. iTeach uses the same learning management system and superior academic standards as the Hibernia College’s primary teacher programme in Ireland.

In the week that Leaving Cert results in science and maths plumbed new depths, it has emerged that Britain is asking one Irish college to train its teachers in those two very subjects.
Hibernia College, which teaches one third of all primary school teachers in Ireland, 600 each year, started giving online Postgraduate Certificate in Education courses in teaching at secondary school level in 2006, in associate with the Canterbury College in Kent.
