We’re flunking in science and maths yet still teaching them to the British

The following article by Philip Ryan appeared in the Irish Mail on Sunday of August 16th, 2009.

In the week that Leaving Cert results in science and maths plumbed new depths, it has emerged that Britain is asking one Irish college to train its teachers in those two very subjects.

Hibernia College, which teaches one third of all primary school teachers in Ireland, 600 each year, started giving online Postgraduate Certificate in Education courses in teaching at secondary school level in 2006, in associate with the Canterbury College in Kent.

Hibernia College offices win architectural award

Hibernia College’s new offices on Lincoln Place have won an award at the Architectural Association of Ireland Awards 2009. The building, adjacent to the College’s existing offices on Clare Street, was designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects. The awards aim to encourage higher standards of architecture throughout the country, to inform the public about emerging directions in contemporary architecture and to recognise projects that make a contribution to Irish architecture.

Hibernia College expands into Kerry Gaeltacht

May 2009

Hibernia College has announced the launch of its second Gaeltacht location in Uíbh Ráthach in South West Kerry. This summer the College will be sending 350 student teachers onsite to the Kerry Gaeltacht as part of its Higher Diploma in Arts in Primary Education. Students from the college currently attend the Gaeltacht in Cor na Móna, Co. Galway each summer, however the expansion of the programme means that a second Gaeltacht was required.

It is expected that several hundred students from the college will attend Gaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh each year on an ongoing basis. The students will spend three weeks attending classes and immersing themselves in the Irish language and culture in the local community.

Hibernia College Wins Silver at International e-Learning Awards Ceremony

Hibernia College, with its pharmaceutical industry partner, Pfizer, has won recognition for its international online Masters in Pharmaceutical Medicine.

The prestigious award was presented at a glittering ceremony held on November 6 2008 at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel in London. The event was an occasion for the who’s who of the e-learning industry to celebrate progress since the millennium (coinciding with the founding of Hibernia College) in the take-up and impact of e-learning on business performance.

Win for Hibernia College Founder

DR. SEAN ROWLAND, the founder of Hibernia College, was last night named the Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year 2008.

“It’s very important for us to get national recognition in Ireland as a leader in quality higher education,” said Dr. Rowland after the announcement was made.

When asked whether he surprised about his win, he said: “I’m absolutely amazed but very delighted.”

Founded in 2000, Hibernia College is an online college offering postgraduate programmes in pharmaceutical medicine, primary teacher education and financial management.

Dr. Rowland describes the company as an international, third-level, online college offering accredited, educational programmes designed to address the growing demand for flexible, cost-effective, lifelong learning that is not restricted by location or time.

He has developed an organisation that has attracted students from more that 20 countries.

Hibernia College has offices in Dublin and Dr. Rowland’s hometown of Westport, Co Mayo, employing more than 50 full time staff members and some 300 adjunct faculties worldwide.

Hibernia College Hosts Harvard Club of Ireland Event

On July 3rd, the Harvard Club of Ireland hosted an evening with Professor Joseph J. McCarthy, Senior Associate Dean and Director of Degree Programmes at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. The topic for the evening’s discussion, was “Ask what you can do… Harvard’s Kennedy School’s contribution to public leadership”. Professor McCarthy was accompanied by his wife Marina who was introduced to the gathering by Harvard Club of Ireland President, Dr. Seán Rowland.

Hibernia College President in Haiti

For a week in mid June, Hibernia College President, Dr. Seán Rowland, joined his fellow Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalists for an intensive international retreat. The retreat combined high-level strategic learning with meaningful action by going to Haiti, one of the world’s poorest countries, where Ireland’s foremost entrepreneurs helped local people to develop the sustainable businesses set up by last year’s finalists. One of the projects involved fixing a weir that had fallen into disrepair to enable residents of the village of Dubreuill irrigate their fields and potentially triple their crop output.

Over 115 entries were received and nominees were subsequently interviewed by Ernst & Young, followed by rigorous assessment by a 12-strong panel of judges, chaired by telecoms entrepreneur, and previous recipient of the award, Mr. Denis O’Brien.

Nicholas Breakwell discusses the importance of having a Master’s of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine in today’s academia-rich society


Dr Nicholas Breakwell obtained a BSc in Psychology and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Birmingham. He spent five years in the internationally respected neuroscience laboratory of Professor Roger Anwyl at Trinity College Dublin. Before joining Hibernia College, Nicholas spent two years as Research Manager and lecturer at Dublin Business School where he developed online course material and conducted empirical research into its effectiveness. Nicholas is the Chief Knowledge Officer at Hibernia College with overall responsibility for course development and e-learning infrastructure. He has consulted widely with international experts in e-learning to bring best international practice to Hibernia’s e-learning strategy.

Summer Courses 2008 Launched

For the fourth year, Hibernia College is launching its suite of online summer courses for teachers. This year, there are 19 courses on offer including 5 new ones. All the courses are fully approved by the Department of Education and Science and quailify for extra personal vacation (EPV) days.

Each course is 20 hours long and is completed entirely online through downloadable course material and online discussion forums moderated by expert facilitators.

Dr. Seán Rowland Presents at the LINC 2007 Conference in Jordan – October 28-30th 2007

On October 28-30th, Dr. Seán Rowland, President of Hibernia College, spoke at the LINC (Learning International Networks Consortium) 2007 Conference held in Jordan. The theme of the conference this year was “Technology enabled education: a catalyst for positive change” and the patron of the event was Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullad of Jordan.

Hibernia College is a founding member of LINC, an international initiative that began in 2001 and is managed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It consists of an international community of individuals and organisations from 50 countries focusing on higher education and the role that technology can play in expanding educational reach. The participants’ main objective is to share best practices in order to move forward with successful distance learning projects in tertiary education in their respective countries.

Hibernia College Graduation Ceremonies

On October 18th and 31st, two more cohorts of students graduated from Hibernia College with Higher Diplomas in Arts in Primary Education. This brings to over 1,000 the number of qualified primary school teachers who have graduated from the college since the online Higher Diploma programme began in October 2003.

All students entering the programme must already have a primary degree and this year’s graduates come from a variety of backgrounds including film production, political science, psychology and computing. The President of Hibernia College, Dr. Seán Rowland, believes that their diverse backgrounds and experiences add to the high quality of the college’s graduates. Dr. Rowland commented:

Hibernia’s Online MSc in Pharmaceutial Medicine officially accredited by IFAPP – October 8th 2007

Hibernia College’s online MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine is now officially accredited by IFAPP’s Council for Education in Pharmaceutical Medicine (CEPM). IFAPP is the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians. In accrediting the programme, Dr. Juan Lahuerta, Chairman of the European CEPM, commented “We trust that your course will raise a lot of interest among physicians and scientists in the pharmaceutical industry and wish you great success with your future endeavours”. News: First Pharmaceutical Medicine students graduate – August 9th, 2007

Thursday August 9th, 2007 saw 27 people from over 11 countries become the first students in the world to graduate with a Masters in Pharmaceutical Medicine through an online college. The event was marked by a graduation ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians on Dublin’s Kildare Street.

The programme is a collaboration between Hibernia College and Pfizer (who funded the initiative) and is run in conjunction with faculty from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Harvard University in Boston.

Dr. Seán Rowland, President of Hibernia College, said, “Innovative programmes such as this are critical in enabling Ireland move towards a knowledge-based economy. Such initiatives promote Ireland as a leading location for scientific research. Today marks the culmination of two years of hard work by both the students and the faculty involved and clearly establishes Hibernia as a global player in e-learning. It also further underlines Ireland’s international reputation as a provider of high-quality, innovative education.”

Pfizer also praised the students for their work. Mr. David Gallagher, Country Manager, Pfizer Healthcare Ireland, commented, “It is my great pleasure to congratulate the students here today on their achievements and for playing their part in pioneering new forms of higher education. At Pfizer we remain committed to working with academia, the public sector and government to sustain inward investment in R&D in Ireland and it is our honour to play a part in developing such a unique capacity for the delivery of education programmes.”

News: Hibernia College Wins “e-Learning Company of the Year” Award – February 1st, 2007

On February 1st, Hibernia College Dublin beat off stiff competition to win the title of “e-Learning Company of the Year” at the Digital Media Awards ceremony held at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin. The awards have been recognising excellence in the field of digital media since 2003.

Hibernia, a HETAC (Higher Education and Training Awards Council)-accredited third-level online college, was founded in 2000 and has formed partnerships with Pfizer, NUI Maynooth and Canterbury Christ Church University to develop online courses in Pharmaceutical Medicine, Hospitality Management and secondary school teacher training respectively.

It is, however, probably best known for its primary teacher training programme, which has now grown to the point where the College is the largest provider of primary school teachers in Ireland.

All of Hibernia’s courses blend the latest online learning technology with face-to-face tutorials and, in the case of the Higher Diploma in Primary Teaching, classroom teaching experience and time spent in the Gaeltacht.

News: Hibernia College and CCCU Launch iTeach

iTeach, an online initial teacher education programme for secondary school teachers, has been launched by the Dean of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), U.K., Professor Sonia Blandford, and Dr Seán Rowland, Executive Chairman of Hibernia College, Ireland. The joint launch took place on Thursday 16th November during Hibernia College’s graduation ceremony at the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin.

iTeach is a high-quality web-based programme allowing students to train to become secondary school teachers in a flexible manner. This project, funded by the TDA, the U.K. government’s training and development agency for schools, will train teachers in each of the maths, physics and chemistry secondary school curriculum areas. The course duration is 18 months and includes 15 weeks of school experience.

Speaking at the launch, Professor Blandford said “Working in partnership is central to the Faculty of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University – we welcome the opportunity to deliver a new and innovative initial teacher education programme in partnership with Hibernia College and look forward to our first joint graduates.”

Dr Rowland added “Our proven model of blended initial teacher education, combined with Canterbury’s OFSTED Category A provision, offers an exciting and innovative solution to England’s shortage of maths and science secondary school teachers.” Dr Rowland went on to say “Working with both the TDA and CCCU reflects extremely well on the high-quality online education service that Hibernia College has to offer.”

The 18-month blended-learning course has been designed to allow applicants enter the programme with varying levels of subject specialist knowledge – thereby providing flexible routes of entry to the widest possible audience. Each programme will include courses in the subject specialism, subject teaching methodologies, professional studies and technology in education alongside a significant period of school experience.

Hibernia College Partners with NUI Maynooth

The President of NUI Maynooth, Professor John G Hughes, and Dr Seán Rowland of Hibernia College jointly launched their Master of Arts in Hospitality Management on Tuesday 12th September at the Kilkenny Campus (NUI Maynooth) Kilkenny.

Specifically designed to meet the needs of busy hospitality professionals, the Master of Arts in Hospitality Management will equip employers and managers with the skills to strategically manage international hotels in an increasingly complex and competitive business environment. The programme will be offered online, enabling students to study where they want at a time that suits them. This flexibility affords employers and managers an opportunity to study best practices from leading hospitality practitioners and academics, whilst continuing to work, thereby enhancing their knowledge and improving work performance.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Rowland said “This is a most welcome addition to Hibernia’s suite of online courses and working in collaboration with such a highly respected educational establishment as NUI Maynooth is a wonderful opportunity for Hibernia moving forward”. Dr Rowland went on to say “the need for continued co-operation and collaboration within the higher education sector in Ireland must be emphasised. We must share finite resources to achieve optimum outcomes in a competitive global environment”. The programme comprises eight 12-week modules to be completed over two years, in addition to an applied research project. The modules currently available include:
