Academic chairman, Hibernia College

As an academic and educator of international stature, Professor Mitchell brings a wide range of experience and abilities to the work of Hibernia College. He had a distinguished academic career in the United States at Cornell and Swarthmore, before being appointed to the Chair of Latin at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 1979. In 1991 he was elected Provost of TCD and led the college through an eventful period of large-scale expansion and development throughout the 1990s.
5.     Dr. Sean M. Rowland

President, Hibernia College

Dr. Seán M. Rowland, President of Hibernia College, was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. Having attended St. Patrick’s College in Dublin, he taught at primary school level for five years before travelling to the US to attend Boston College. Here he was awarded a Masters Degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Administration. He then pursued and completed his Ph.D. in Curriculum Instruction and Administration (CIA) with a focus on educational finance within the CIA programme. Dr. Rowland also holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

While at Boston College, Dr. Rowland established and was appointed Executive Director of the Centre for Irish Management. His goals in creating the centre were to encourage economic development and create employment in Ireland through education, executive development and relationship building. Dr. Rowland also established the Irish Institute at Boston College, and, as Executive Director, worked extensively with young Irish professionals, political leaders and educators to promote Irish/US relations, provide upskilling in a variety of professional areas and contribute to job creation in Ireland.

In 2000, Dr. Rowland brought together his colleagues from the corporate, education and technological communities to create Hibernia College, Ireland’s first and only, accredited online third-level institution. The programme for which the college is currently best known is its Higher Diploma in Arts in Primary Education. Graduates from this course are now highly sought after by many schools around Ireland.

Under Dr. Rowland’s leadership, Hibernia College has also collaborated with Pfizer (the world’s largest research-based pharmaceutical company) to develop a Masters Degree programme in Pharmaceutical Medicine and more recently with the UK’s Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) to develop an online education programme for secondary school teachers in England. This programme in England has now expanded to multiple Universities across England. This collaboration is particularly exciting because it puts Hibernia College in the unique position of providing teacher education in Ireland and England.

Dr. Rowland is the current President of the Harvard Club of Ireland and is a member of Harvard University’s Littauer Society. He is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Leadership Council at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, a member of the Harvard Faculty Club and an active alumnus of Boston College. In addition, Dr. Rowland is a member of the Institute of Directors, Ireland and of the Royal Dublin Society. He is on the advisory board of the Soul of Haiti Foundation and is a board member of the Irish Famine Commemoration Fund.

In 2008 Dr. Rowland won the Ernst and Young Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award and in 2009 was named as one of the “100 greatest self-made Irish entrepreneurs” by Irish Entrepreneur magazine.

Executive Vice-President, Hibernia College

Sara was actively involved in the foundation of Hibernia College and brings extensive experience and expertise, in all areas of educational operations and administration, to her role as Executive Vice-President.

Prior to her work with Hibernia College, Sara held a number of positions at Boston College, initially in 1996 as research manager at the Centre for Irish Management. Her role there involved identifying market needs to be addressed by the college’s educational and professional programmes. She played a leading role in the design, development and delivery of these programmes. Sara became programme director for Boston College in Ireland in 1997 and was instrumental in the successful delivery of the institute’s programming in areas including international governance, domestic policy, leadership, tourism management and business development.

Sara has a B.A. Mod (Hons) in Natural Science from Trinity College Dublin and holds postgraduate and professional qualifications in marketing, training and development.

7.     Dr. Nicholas Breakwell

Executive Dean, Hibernia College

Dr. Nicholas Breakwell is the Executive Dean at Hibernia College with overall responsibility for teaching and learning strategy and e-learning infrastructure. He has been responsible for the development of the next-generation learning tools that now power all Hibernia College online programmes.

Hibernia College recently hosted its inaugural research conference entitled “Accessing Funds of Knowledge in School Partnerships: Great Expectations in Hard Times”. It was a great success with a varied delegation from different areas of the education spectrum both primary and secondary. One hundred delegates enjoyed three very different presentations both in terms of content and presentation styles.

Each presentation provided many issues for debate and discussion as was evident by the energising buzz around the conference room.

Professor Otmar Gassner from the University College of Teacher Education in Vorarlberg, Austria, presented research evidence from his experience of Initial Teacher Training in Austria. He explained that in the Austrian Initial Teacher Training structure the universities and colleges have on-campus schools specifically used for teaching practice, in addition to local partnership schools. One of the key findings from this research was the way in which technology enhanced the quality of feedback provided to the student teacher by the HEI placement tutor, co-operating teacher and mentor. He discussed how students are peer reviewed whereby in addition to tutors and mentors, students observe and critique each other during teaching practice. He highlighted how in the traditional face-to-face feedback model reviewers were less honest in their responses to the student and the feedback itself lacked depth. When asked to upload their feedback digitally, in isolation of the group, it was found that everyone involved in the process were more honest and more thought and consideration was given to the issues to be addressed. This in turn led to a much richer learning experience for the student and also led to identifying the quality of feedback that best supported a student teacher.

Paula Gladwin, Director of Programmes Hibernia College UK, and Liam Cullinan, Deputy Head teacher from Perry Beeches, jointly prepared and delivered a highly entertaining and enthusiastic presentation on the structure and success of UK secondary initial teacher training, specifically how it worked in Perry Beaches-The Academy in Birmingham.

In partnership with Hibernia College Perry Beeches has used teacher education as part of a strategic drive for school improvement. Both Liam and Paula outlined the roles and responsibilities for each partner. Schools took on an integral role in the practical training of student teachers which is distinctly different to the model used in Ireland. One of the most significant benefits of this partnership as reported by Liam was the way in which it improved the quality of teaching and learning for all members of the school community.

In the afternoon session four women, Dr Mairín Glenn, Dr Bernie Sullivan, Dr Caitriona McDonagh and Dr Mary Roche shared their living theory of developing learning communities within a Higher Education Institution/School partnership framework. Their research – experientially and evidentially based – demonstrated that this kind of partnership would contribute to developing ‘researchly’ dispositions across all participants in the partnership.

Taken together the three presentations raised the following themes and questions for those attending the conference:

    Relationships built on trust are key to developing meaningful partnerships and co-constructing roles and responsibilities to support trusting relationships;

  The issue of equity for different participants in the partnership is complex and contestable especially where the HEI tutor is the only person to grade a student;

School-HEI partnerships in teacher education have the potential to support and facilitate learning communities in a way that is sustainable; in adopting an enquiry and  action-research approach to the process this can enable teacher education to be both research informed and research informing;

An overarching theme emerging from the conference was the importance of providing opportunities across the partnership members to articulate their personal values at given points in the process.

One of the main events during the day was Rob O’Neill’s, Hibernia College ICT Manager, demonstration of the Google Nexus 7 tablet which will be given to schools who partner with Hibernia College for student teacher placements. This tablet will allow the co-operating teacher to access a range of resources on the College’s online learning management system (HELMS) such as course content and a very extensive online library. It will also allow the co-operating teacher to download and comment on a student teacher’s lesson during the observation of that lesson.

In keeping with Hibernia College’s interactive approach, the morning section of the conference was live streamed via our website and we also engaged with queries via Twitter.

Overall the day provided a welcome opportunity for the teaching and learning community at Hibernia College to share views and ideas. It was also an opportunity to reflect on current research evidence, both national and international relating to the factors that contribute to successful school-HEI partnerships.

Thank you to everybody who helped make the conference such a positive learning and social occasion. We envisage that this will be the first of several research conferences hosted by Hibernia College.
