Entry Criteria

The programme entry criteria incorporate the minimum trainee entry requirements set by the Secretary of State for Education for entry to postgraduate ITT programmes, additional Hibernia College UK trainee entry criteria and the financial eligibility criteria developed by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

For entry to the programme all applicants must:

1.       Have achieved  a grade C in the GCSE examination in English and Mathematics by the time they start their ITT programme. Click here for a list of GCSE equivalents.

2.       Have been subject to a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure check and/or any other appropriate background checks and that such checks do not identify them as being unsuited to working with children.

3.       Have met the Secretary of State’s requirements for health and physical capacity to teach.

4.       Have undertaken or have evidence of having arranged to undertake 5 days of secondary classroom experience prior to programme start. If you still need to organize classroom experience, you can do this at your nearest Hub School. All but one of our Hub Schools participate in the TDA School Experience Programme.

5.       Meet the Training and Development Agency’s financial eligibility criteria in order to apply for and to be accepted for a publicly-funded place on this ITT programme (this criterion does not apply to self-funded places).

6.       Have the intellectual and academic capabilities needed to meet the required QTS Standards including the requirements to hold a first degree of a United Kingdom Higher Education Institution of at least 2:2 class or higher in a relevant related subject or another qualification of equivalent academic standard in a relevant related subject.

7.       Have the necessary subject, intellectual and academic capabilities needed to bridge any gap they may have between their subject knowledge at the time they start their ITT programme and that required to enable them to demonstrate the pedagogical knowledge required to allow them to meet QTS standard 14 (qualified teacher status standard Q14) for the 11-16 age range for either Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics by the planned time of completion of their ITT programme.

8.    Be able to read effectively and are able to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English but additionally, in the case of applicants whose first language is not English, demonstrate English language proficiency.

9.    Possess the appropriate qualities, attitudes and values expected of a teacher.
