Entry Requirements

  • The minimum requirement is a degree in a scientific or mathematical discipline; those without these qualifications may struggle to complete the course. Additional professional experience in the subject is also recommended.
  • Those with good A-levels or equivalent in the subject area may be considered but it should be noted that they would not be eligible for a PGCE course and would be required to self-fund.

Entry requirements for applicants intending to pay their own course fees

You may also be accepted on the SKE course without the offer of a place on a postgraduate Initial Teacher Training course, but you will be required to pay full course fees. While there are no specific entry requirements to undertake the course in this way, it is strongly recommended that applicants should possess three A-levels, one in a related subject to their chosen course of study and/or suitable professional experience in a related field. It is also recommended that trainees posses sufficient levels of English (minimum GCSE Grade C or equivalent) to allow them to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with fellow trainees and tutors on the course and to complete any written assignments.

While the course covers subject knowledge content starting from pre-GCSE level, it does not provide progressive coverage of the GCSE syllabus. Substantial elements of the course relate to topics at A-level and above, so it is necessary that trainees are suitably equipped to work at this level.

Individual applications will be considered on their merits by the course team and, where necessary, you may be contacted for more information if the team has any concerns about your ability to engage with the course. We reserve the right to withhold the offer of a place to any candidate who we feel is not suitably qualified to successfully engage with the course.
