Q1: What qualifications do I need to join this SKE programme?

To enrol on any of the SKE courses (and receive Teaching Agency funding), you must have a confirmed, conditional offer of a place on a programme of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) in the subject you apply for, post Key Stage 3, from an accredited ITT provider. When you have successfully completed the SKE course, you will be eligible to take up your place at that institution. If you do not have a confirmed offer of a place from an accredited provider of ITT, you may still apply but you will be obliged to pay the full course fees.

Q2: Do I have to pay tuition fees?

The course is fully funded by the Teaching Agency for Home/EU students who are suitably qualified and who have a confirmed, conditional offer of a place on a programme of ITT. This offer must be for the subject they apply for, post Key Stage 3, from an accredited provider.

To qualify as a Home/EU student you must hold an EU passport and have proof of 3 years residency in the UK. Applicants who do not possess an EU passport but have the right to remain UK and have 3 years residency in the UK may also qualify for a fully-funded place.

Individuals who do not have such an offer or fail to fulfil the residency requirements will be fully responsible for their own course fees.

Q3. What support is given to SKE trainees?

There is a dedicated support team of both technical and academic staff to help and support trainees throughout the programme. At the start of the course, trainees are given a full induction including training in setting up and using the online tutorial software. Trainees are assigned to their own personal tutors, and progress and engagement is monitored through the web site to ensure that all trainees are coping.

Q4. Who is the SKE course for?

  • The SKE course is designed for graduates who need to develop a greater depth of subject understanding prior to training for Qualified Teacher Status in England.
  • It is particularly suitable for those unable to travel to a traditional face-to-face SKE course due to family or work commitments.
  • It is also suitable for all those wishing to refresh and consolidate their Maths, Chemistry or Physics subject knowledge in an education context, for example, those returning to the profession or new to the profession or those with a teaching qualification in a related but different specialist subject.

Q5. To what standard will I be able to teach Maths, Physics or Chemistry?

The course covers topics from pre-GCSE up to first year undergraduate level to refresh and consolidate trainees’ knowledge of the key concepts taught in schools today. These courses do not qualify you to teach on their own; your ITT programme will determine the level to which you are qualified to teach.

Q6. What are the bursary arrangements?

For those who have secured a conditional place on a programme of Initial Teacher Training and meet the funding eligibility criteria, fees do not apply. Bursaries are available are as follows:

  • 4-unit courses – £1,600
  • 6-unit courses – £2,400
  • 8-unit courses – £3,200
  • 12-unit courses – £4,800
  • 16-unit courses – £6,400

Q7. How do I apply?
