Autism: Promoting Social Communication Skills of Pupils with ASD (Spring)



This course outlines evidence-based strategies to promote social communication skills for pupils with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). The course also discusses the management of challenging behaviour, classroom management, collaboration and developing individual education plans (IEPs) for pupils with ASDs. The course gives a general introduction to autism, leading to an understanding of the difficulties facing pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) on a daily basis. The course also outlines practical strategies and interventions for managing the classroom as well as managing the behaviour, learning and communication skills of pupils with ASDs. The course goes on to outline and provide teachers with evidence-based strategies to promote the social communication skills of this group of children, including:

  • Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren (TEACCH)
  • Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
  • Social stories
  • Intensive interaction

    The Hibernia College Continuing Professional Development (CPD) team is headed up by Teresa Mc Hale, Director of CPD. A primary school teacher, specialising in teaching pupils with ASD, Teresa taught in mainstream and special education settings for over twenty five years before taking up her position at Hibernia College in 2007. Our team also consists of CPD administration, a highly-dedicated IT Support team, a team of experienced online tutors and our Learning and Design team.
