This course will help teachers to develop the skills and competencies required in response to the increasing demands of inclusive educational policy and practice in Ireland. Teachers will be given the opportunity to reflect on their professional role in relation to inclusion and supporting all learners in their classroom. They will enhance their knowledge, skills and competencies in key areas of inclusive and special educational provision and planning, while exploring evidence-based strategies and approaches that enhance outcomes for learners with special educational needs.

The objectives of this course are to:

  • Explore the concept of inclusion and the inclusive school.
  • Examine the literature in relation to inclusion and special education.
  • Explore the legislative and policy framework that underpins inclusivity in schools.
  • Examine the categories of special educational needs.
  • Gain an understanding of the practices and approaches that embrace diversity and inclusion and enhance outcomes for learners.
  • Examine the importance of working with parent(s)/guardians(s) and other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child or young person with additional needs.
