Religious Education: Grow in Love (Spring)

This Religious Education course examines the structure of the Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Education Curriculum and the pedagogy and themes of the Grow in Love Programme to date. The pedagogy and structure of the Grow in Love Programme described in this course will apply to all teachers at primary level, from Junior Infants to 6th class, as the new programme continues to be rolled out. The course also explores the specific themes within the Grow in Love programme from Junior Infants to 2nd class and the Strands and Strand Units, the spiral nature of the curriculum, learning outcomes and Faith Formation Goals of the curriculum. Teachers will learn more on preparing students for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion for the first time, and planning for Religious Education. Catholic school ethos, pluralism and patronage will also be explored, in addition to inter-religious education.

    The Hibernia College Continuing Professional Development (CPD) team is headed up by Teresa Mc Hale, Director of CPD. A primary school teacher, specialising in teaching pupils with ASD, Teresa taught in mainstream and special education settings for over twenty five years before taking up her position at Hibernia College in 2007. The objectives of the course are to:

  • Increase teachers’ understanding of the structure of the Religious Education curriculum Grow in Love, and how to apply the Strand and Strand Units when planning.
  • Understand the pedagogy of Grow in Love.
  • Become familiar with the Themes within the Grow In Love programme from Junior Infants to 2nd class.
  • Increase knowledge of the schools/ teacher’s role in preparing the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion for the first time.
  • Increase awareness of Inter – Religious education within the Catholic primary school and the allocated time for all classes.
  • Understand the reason for the high number of Catholic primary schools within a historical context and how Catholic patronage of primary schools is changing.
  • To increase awareness of planning for Religious Education.
  • Give teachers an opportunity to discuss their experience of teaching Religious Education and to share strategies for good teaching and learning.
