Why did you choose to specialise in inclusive and special education, and why did you choose Hibernia College / ICEP Europe for this programme?
As a school leader, I felt the need to deepen my understanding of inclusive education and additional educational needs. I chose Hibernia College and ICEP Europe because it covered all the areas I was looking to understand better — inclusive education, autism, dyslexia, and behaviour. Also, the flexible structure of the programme allowed me to balance my studies with working fulltime.
What field of work or study were you in before you started the programme?
When I started the programme, I was working as Deputy Principal in Donabate Community College, a vibrant and inclusive post-primary school in North County Dublin. I’m still in that role today, and before that I was a Maths teacher.
Can you tell us a bit about your research project or your chosen module focus within the MA/PG Dip, and what motivated you to choose that area?
In my assignments I examined the role of school leadership in promoting inclusion and supporting teachers to meet the needs of all learners. As a Deputy Principal, I wanted to explore how schools can create a culture where inclusion is not just a policy, but part of everything we do. Since starting the course, I’ve become much more mindful of inclusion and I’ve tried to find simple, practical ways to encourage staff to share ideas, learn from one another, and build a culture of shared responsibility for making our school more inclusive for all students.
Now that you have graduated, what are your next career or professional plans within the field of inclusive or special education?
Now that I’ve graduated, I’m focused on continuing to build a more inclusive culture in my school. I also want to keep learning and developing my own understanding of inclusion. This course taught me that inclusive education takes constant learning, reflection, and a willingness to keep improving.
What advice would you give to someone considering the MA/PG Dip in Inclusive and Special Education at Hibernia College & ICEP Europe?
I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who’s thinking about starting it. The tutors are knowledgeable, supportive, and engaging. I found the online format manageable while working full time, and the lectures were clear, comprehensive, and encouraged discussion and participation. The assignments are a challenge – 5,000 words for each module, but the tutors prepare you well and make sure you know exactly what’s expected. My advice would be to start your assignments early because they take time.
