Why did you choose teaching and why Hibernia College?
I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was at school myself. It was always a place in which I felt happy and appreciated due in large part to the great teachers that I had. I decided to study with Hibernia because of the flexibility that if offered and because of I already knew quite a lot of people who successfully completed the course before me and who had been teaching at that point.
What field of work or study were you in before you started your PME?
I was working as a Library Assistant in the Donegal Library Services.
Can you tell us a bit about your research project and why you focused on this area?
My research was based on Junior Teachers Perspectives on Stratagies to support Oral Irish acquisition. I chose the topic because of deep interest I have in the language and as it was connected to my undergraduate studies. I also decided on the topic for practical reasons as the Qualitative findings and the research I conducted will prove useful in my teaching going forward.
Now that you have graduated, what are your plans?
I am working in a local school this year and I would like to try something new next year perhaps in a school in another part of the country. My wish is to teach in a Gaelscoil or Scoil Gaeltachta.
What piece of advice would you give to any person considering starting a PME?
Talk to anyone you know who has done or is doing the course. Make yourself very organised and remember that the college is here to help anytime you need it. I can attest to that. Hibernia really couldn’t have been any more helpful to me!
