Biography
I began my teaching career in a DEIS school in north Dublin where I taught Mathematics, Science, and Physics for over 10 years. I then moved to the role of Mathematics Advisor with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST), where I supported teachers of mathematics across Ireland with exploring new approaches to mathematics in their classroom. Following that, I became the Team Leader for CPD Design, DEIS and JCSP in PDST. In this role I coordinated a team of advisors who supported post-primary DEIS schools with achieving their goals for their students. Most recently, I was a Senior Leader for Research and Quality Assurance with Oide (formerly PDST, JCT, NIPT and CSL). In this role I supported post-primary teams with the design of Teacher Professional Learning in several subject areas, chaired a number of educational stakeholder meetings with representatives from NCCA, DE, NCSE, SEC and other relevant groups. In addition to these roles I also sit on the NCSE’s Consultative Forum, which has a role in supporting the Council of the NCSE.
Research interests
At both undergraduate and postgraduate level, my research focussed on identifying causes and variance of mathematical anxiety amongst students in post-primary schools in Ireland. In recent years, my interests have shifted into the areas of; becoming a teacher educator, the transition from student teacher to NQT, effective models of professional learning in education.
