Education

Biography

Karina Murray is an Assistant Professor in Nursing in Hibernia College. Karina is a dual-qualified registered General and Paediatric nurse. She graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing Science Degree (General) from Dundalk Institute of Technology in 2007. She later completed a Higher Diploma in Children’s Nursing through Dublin City University and graduated in 2009. She has held posts in Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda, in CHI at Temple Street and Beacon Renal in Drogheda. In Our Lady of Lourdes, she worked as a paediatric staff nurse on the paediatric ward. In CHI at Temple Street, she worked as part of the Nephrology Team and spent time as a renal staff nurse, Haemodialysis Clinical Nurse Manager and Haemodialysis Clinical Nurse Specialist. She also worked as a Clinical Nurse Manager in the Beacon Renal in Drogheda.

She completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Renal Nursing and master’s degree in nursing through the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). As part of her master’s degree, she completed a systematic review research study examining the impact of self-management education programmes on blood glucose levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease. She was shortlisted for the Research Communication award in 2023. The results of her research have been presented at local level within the RCSI among academic and research fellows.

Research interests

Karina’s main research interests include chronic diseases such as kidney disease and diabetes mellitus and the impact early interventions have in delaying long term complications. Additionally, she has an interest in innovative learning techniques on student learning and development.
