Biography

Dr Julie Uí Choistealbha is the Registrar of Hibernia College, and a member of the College’s Executive Management Team.

Julie has worked in the education sector for over 20 years, initially as a primary school teacher but then moving to higher education where she held a variety of senior leadership positions including Senior Lecturer, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Dean of Education.

Both her teaching and research are rooted in professional learning, specifically in the initial teacher education and induction phases of the continuum of teacher education. Her professional interests include internationalisation, placement experiences and ePortfolios. She was the lead author on the Teaching Council funded DEEPEN research report (2021) which explored the perspectives, experiences and narratives of newly qualified teachers, school leaders, Professional Support Teams and other school personnel participating in the Droichead process (school-based induction) in Irish primary and post-primary schools. Julie was also the co-researcher on the Shared Island Unit in the Department of the Taoiseach/SCoTENS funded SHARED project (2022) which explored how teacher educators can prepare and support student teachers to negotiate and engage with social justice issues on their school placement. In 2023 Julie was elected as the Southern co-chair of SCoTENS, and she currently leads the North South Student Teacher Exchange. She has presented on her research both nationally and internationally.
Quality education experiences and upholding both professional and academic standards are foundational to Julie’s work. She has been involved with numerous quality reviews, new programme accreditation processes and re-accreditation processes. She has worked as an external examiner in various universities and was appointed as an expert external reviewer for the European School Whole School Inspection Process.

Julie holds a Doctorate in Education (D.Ed.) from Trinity College Dublin, and a Masters in Education (M.Ed.) from Dublin City University. She is deeply committed to her ongoing professional development and has undertaken courses in the areas of law, leadership, mentoring, safeguarding, consent, student support, GDPR and cyber-security.
